Careers

Orchard House High School is committed to providing a planned programme of impartial careers education and information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) for all students as part of the Enterprise, Employability and Independence Curriculum. Student progress is tracked through carefully structured enterprise outcomes and monitoring of careers related learning.

This curriculum incorporates a wide range of planned activities, each having clear learning outcomes which support the development of skills that are required for the world of work and lifelong learning.  At Orchard House High School careers education, information advice and guidance is both broad and balanced. The focus of this, is on the personal development of each individual pupil, offering fully inclusive opportunities both within school and outside school to develop the necessary skills required to be “work ready” as they leave school.

Student’s learning is enhanced by their participation in enterprise days, visits, enrichment activities and their involvement in local community projects. All activities aim to inspire, challenge and motivate pupils whilst at the same time promoting equality of opportunity.

Promoting independence and employability skills are an essential part of the mission and ethos of Orchard House High School. We aim to support the aspirations of all our learners and to ensure that they gain the understanding, skills and experience they need to make progress and succeed in learning and work. We believe that effective careers education and guidance not only contributes to the wellbeing of individuals but also to the wellbeing of their families, the communities to which they belong, wider society, businesses, and the economy.

The careers provision at Orchard House is in line with the statutory guidance developed by the Department for Education, which refers to Section 42A and 45A of the Education Act 1997. This states that all schools should provide independent careers guidance from Years 8 -13 and that this guidance should:

  • be impartial.
  • include information on a range of pathways, including apprenticeships.
  • be adapted to the needs of the pupil.

In addition, the school is compliant with the careers guidance that the government set out for delivery from January 2018: ‘Careers Guidance and Inspiration for young people in schools.’ This states that all schools must give education and training providers the opportunity to talk to students about approved technical qualifications and apprenticeships.

Our careers strategy is informed by the following priorities:

  • supporting individual aspirations, improving attainment, and ensuring positive destinations for all pupils in school
  • meeting the individual needs of all our pupils through a programme of personalised learning
  • developing learners’ independence skills, especially those associated with career adaptability, resilience, enterprise, and employability.
  • working with parents/carers, community, and business partners to meet students’ career development needs.
